The Peace Club at Friends Seminary high school in NYC formally dedicated a quadrant of Stuyvesant Square Park as a Garden of Forgiveness on October 25, 2008. Garden of Forgiveness Executive Director Lyndon Harris spoke, as did Claire Brennan, student leader of the Peace Club. Both spoke of the importance of forgiveness in peacemaking, and of the significance of the first Garden of Forgiveness in NYC coming from youth. It truly has been a joy for us to work with these amazing students. Look below for photographs from the dedication!

Friends Seminary Peace Club to Dedicate Garden

in Stuyvesant Park

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In partnership with the Global Gardens of Forgiveness Network, the Friends Seminary Peace Club will dedicate a “Garden of Forgiveness” in Stuyvesant Square Park on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 12 p.m.

Reverend Lyndon Harris, executive director of the Gardens of Forgiveness, and Claire Brennan, student coordinator and Peace Club leader at Friends Seminary, will speak during the ceremony. Those in attendance will be invited to plant a bulb in the garden space.

The “Garden of Forgiveness” in Stuyvesant Square Park will be a public place to raise awareness about the power of forgiveness for healing and conflict transformation, connecting the local community to the global network of Gardens of Forgiveness, including Beirut, Lebanon, where the movement began. Youth-driven, the “Garden of Forgiveness” in Stuyvesant Square Park will teach a new generation of leaders important tools for transforming conflict and creating a new future.

The event will coincide with “It’s My Park Day,” a semi-annual event in May and October, which brings thousands of volunteers to over 150 sites in all five boroughs.
